that will ensure that your skin is looking its best but let’s start with the basics on the skin and what causes the skin to age…
Your skin is the largest organ of your body. It is vital to survival. The skin protects our bodies from harmful pathogens, it regulates our body temperature, it gives us our sense of touch, and it protects vital structures inside the body from injury and from the damaging rays of the sun.
Our skin has the amazing ability of constantly renew itself and the ability to repairs itself after injury (thankfully sunburns do not last forever). The epidermis and the dermis are the two layers that make up the skin. The outer layer of the skin is the epidermis and is the layer of the skin you see everyday. The epidermis is thin but is the tough, protective layer of the skin. The dermis is the inner layer of the skin and is responsible for the elasticity and strength.
There are a number of tell-tell signs that our skin is aging including:
- wrinkles
- age spots
- sagging skin
What are wrinkles really?
Wrinkles in the skin are formed when the skin thins and loses its elasticity. Wrinkles are formed in weakened areas of the skin caused by habitual facial expressions including smiling and squinting; sun damage from UVA and UVB light; and low hydration of the overall body. Other factors that help to determine the rate of and the extent of wrinkles include lifestyle habits such as smoking, environmental pollution exposure, stress, lack of proper skin care, and diet/nutrition.
What are age spots?
Age spots (also sometime known as liver spots) are the results of a buildup of wastes in the skin know as lipofuscin accumulation which is a byproduct of free radical damage to the skin cells.
Though these brown spots themselves are harmless – they can be a sign of more serious underlying issues. These spots are signs that the skin cells are full of accumulated wastes that slowly destroy body cells including brain and liver cells. Age spots are a surface sign of free radical damage of the body that may affect many internal structures, the eye and the heart.
The leading factors in the formation of age spots are excessive sun exposure (#1 factor), poor diet lacking the vital antioxidants, lack of exercise, smoking and over intake of oxidized oils over long time frame.
Why does our skin sag as we age?
As we beginning to age (around 30), we begin to have less and less elastin and collagen in our skin. Elastin and collagen are the two connective tissues that give our skin its elasticity and firmness. Once we have less and less ability for our skin to bounce back – our once firm skin begins to sag.
Additionally, skin with less elastic also become drier and lines become more noticeable. The sub-layer of fat padding begins to disappear. With loss of support by fat padding and connective tissues, the skin begins to sag (sadly).
