There’s no better way to feel younger and be healthier than to improve your level of physical fitness. However, many people are intimidated by the thought of starting a fitness program. I learned the importance of fitness and proper nutrition long before medical school. In fact, I believe, medical school does not give the proper emphasis to these important topics. I was a competitive natural bodybuilder in my teens and early twenties, and have been involved in martial arts since I was very young.

As a doctor, I’ve noticed that not only do many of my patients not exercise, but many feel that they can’t. Others have made attempts to start a fitness program in the past, but failed to continue due to lack of motivation or other factors.

I wanted to make the anti-aging and health benefits of exercise available to everyone, regardless of their current level of fitness (or lack thereof). What are the benefits of exercise which are so important?
  • Perhaps the greatest anti-aging benefit of exercise is that people who engage in regular exercise feel like they have more energy. Regular exercise can help to prevent heart disease, obesity and diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and low back pain.

  • Exercise can also helps relieve stress and depression.

  • Exercise improves your resting heart rate. It has also been shown to increase levels of HDL (good) cholesterol and decrease the levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol, decreasing the risks of heart disease.

  • Exercise burns calories and raises your metabolism which are key factors for weight loss. Weight loss, in turn, decreases insulin resistance and thereby decreases your risk of developing type II diabetes.

  • Weight bearing exercises promotes bone mineralization, preventing osteoporosis.

  • Strengthening your core muscles through exercise helps maintain proper posture, which decreases stress on the lumbar spine, and thereby can prevent or relieve low back pain.

  • In addition to these disease prevention benefits, exercise releases endorphins, relieving stress and helping to ward off depression. It is usually those who feel that they aren’t able to start exercising that need the benefits of exercise most.

Of course, we all already know exercise is good for us. That’s why for the first two weeks of every January all of the gyms are packed to the gills with people who have fresh resolutions to get fit. However, come February, the gyms are empty again. Why do so many people fail to realize their goals of being fit? I am going to tell you the common mistakes people make leading to their failure. The most important aspect about the anti-aging fitness program is not the program itself, but the philosophy behind it. The idea is to find something active which you enjoy doing, start out slowly and then very gradually increase the intensity of your activity.
