Calcium Rich Foods
Calcium rich foods are very important to any anti-aging diet plan. Studies have shown that an adequate intake of calcium is important for maintaining a healthy weight, and may help to prevent high blood pressure. Eating high calcium foods throughout ones life is very important for the prevention of
osteoporosis.
Osteoporosis is a debilitating disease affecting 1 in 2 women and 1 in 4 men in their lifetime, which can significantly decrease ones quality of life in later years. Osteoporosis is the cause of compression fractures of the bones of the spine, or vertebrae. These vertebral fractures cause the stooped over posture and loss of height sometimes associated with the elderly, and can be very painful. Osteoporosis is also the cause of painful hip fractures which can lead to decreased mobility and ability to care for oneself. This leaves many wheelchair bound and frequently leads to long term or permanent nursing home placement.
Eating foods high in calcium and taking part in an anti-aging fitness program are key factors in preventing osteoporosis. Its never too early to start preventing osteoporosis. Maximum bone mass is already achieved by the late teen years,
and the more bone mass you start out with, the less chance you will become osteoporotic. Below, I will provide you with a list of calcium rich foods so that you and your family can be sure to do everything possible to prevent osteoporosis.
I have divided the list of calcium rich foods into two categories, dairy and non-dairy. Everyone knows that dairy foods are the first thing we think of when we talk about foods high in calcium. However, large portions of the population have difficulty digesting dairy foods or have a dairy allergy. In fact, 90% percentage of Asians Americans and 75% of African Americans and Native Americans are lactose intolerant (unable to digest in dairy products). For these people, I suggest eating plenty of foods from the non-dairy list of calcium rich foods, or investing in a quality
calcium supplement.
