Peptides and Your Skin

What are Peptides?

Peptides (aka polypeptides), consist of two or more amino acids bonded together. Larger polypeptides are generally referred to as proteins. Proteins are the essential components of muscles, skin, bones and the body as a whole.

Individual proteins have a unique function in the body and they are necessary for the function, structure and regulation of the body's cells, tissues, and organs including the skin.

Smaller polypeptides - only 5 amino acids long - are called pentapeptides. These act as messengers in the skin which signal to produce more proteins such as collagen and elastin which are responsible for skin’s firmness and elasticity. As we age, the messenger peptides become less affective and the result is a decrease in collagen production in particular.

Several studies have shown promising results from the use of peptides on lines and wrinkles. Now, this is not an overnight cure but it has been shown to decrease the appearance of fine to moderate wrinkles.

Are polypeptide anti-aging skin care products really an alternative to botox?

Botox, or Botulinum Toxin, is a poison produced by bacteria which leads to muscle paralysis. Botox reduces wrinkles by literally paralyzing the underlying muscles of the face … If the face can not move, your skin will not move either.

Polypeptides can be used to simulate the effects of Botox. Of course, they work differently than Botox and it will take longer for it to work. You may still see some deeper lines. However, it does not cause facial paralysis or a need to see your doctor.

While the cost for peptide based anti-aging creams and gels many not be cheap - they are generally significantly less expensive than botox procedures over time.

Where can I find them?

Peptides can be found in numerous anti-aging products currently on the market. When looking at anti-aging creams and products look for it to contain the word polypeptides or pentapeptide in the ingredients.

Polypeptide based anti-aging creams do not cause inflammation which are often seen in products that have chemical reactions or produce faical stress to the skin such as chemical peals and microdemabrasion.

Polypeptides or pentapeptide anti-aging products are often incorporated with other ingredients increasing the benefit to your skin.
